Conclusion

The German Gothic style was crucial in the renovation of the Spanish Gothic style during the second half of the 15th century. Three centuries later, Ribes's small vault links us up again to the Central European Gothic style with a net vault. The net is a crossing design not very much used in the Iberian Peninsula, much more inclined to carry out a clear division in sections in which to install an isolated starred vault. Nevertheless, there were two truly colossal exceptions to the rule: Juan de Álava, in the kingdom of Castile and Joao del Castillo, in Portugal. The work of these two geniuses is full of formidable examples of sophisticated and complex net vaults. In this context, Joseph Ribes, at the beginning of the 18th century in Barcelona, shows interest in this type of vaults again and includes an interesting example in his treatise which has made it possible to carry out the interesting academic exercise from which the preceding reflection emerges.

As we mentioned previously, Ribes's vault reminds us of a Gothic style which, definitely, refuses to disappear and spurs us on opening a new door in the historiography of this style: the Post-Gothic style. From the 16th century, a great number of Gothic constructions, some of them colossal, are still being built in our country; most of these works do not deserve the least attention. Almost all the Spanish treatises of the 17th century, including Benito Bails, already at the high of the Enlightenment, include more or less extensive studies on grid crossing vaults. There are some clear signs in our country which impel us to open a field of knowledge of this Gothic style not yet explored. In much the same way as in a not too distant time the late Gothic style reached the level of consideration it deserved, now the PostGothic style is demanding its place in History. The Germans already opened this field some time ago, we are referring to the Nach Gotic style.[....]
